What is Linguistics?

Linguistics is the science of language. While most often classified as a social science, it’s really an interdisciplinary field that sits at the intersection of social sciences, humanities, and STEM – language is such a fundamental piece of our collective humanity that it almost defies categorization.

Linguists apply scientific thinking to analyze all aspects of language, from how we produce and perceive the sounds of speech, to what rules of grammar we know only unconsciously, to how language shapes and is shaped by society and culture.

Why Should I Study Linguistics?

Students will come out of this class with a stronger understanding of:

  • How the thousands of languages in the world differ from each other and what they have in common
  • How the languages and dialects we speak can influence our life
  • Why linguists don’t think that emoji or the word ‘irregardless’ are ruining our language
  • And much more!

They’ll also:

  • Develop their critical thinking skills
  • Learn to analyze complex data by recognizing and explaining patterns

The critical thinking, problem solving, data analysis, and communication skills developed in the study of linguistics prepare students for a wide range of possible careers, from business to education to government. Some popular linguistic careers include:

  • Speech-language pathology
  • Forensic linguistics
  • Language policy and law
  • Developing language AI technologies
